Special event for women
It is now just over a year since the Institute's Women in Plumbing Group (WPG) was formed and since that time the group has been extremely successful in raising awareness of the need for more women in the industry. For instance, there is a great demand for female plumbers by the elderly and vulnerable in our society, but out of an estimated 125,000 plumbers in UK less than 1% are female. However, it is not just female plumbers that the group represents, it is also there for female lecturers, trainees, designers, consultants, women in managerial positions within the industry, women working within manufacturing and women who act as administrators within plumbing companies, whether they are full time-employees or "doing the books" for their husbands/partners.
On 23rd October, the WPG will be holding its first special event at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD at 12pm. The Theme of the afternoon will be: "The importance of the role of women at work."
The event will begin with a buffet, followed by an afternoon of quality speakers and will finish with refreshments - admission is free. It is expected to end around 4.30pm. This will be an ideal opportunity for people to network from all areas of the industry.
There will be five speakers in all: Baroness Anita Gale, a supporter of the WPG; Claire Curtis-Thomas MP for Crosby, a chartered engineer; Ursula Russell MBE, Chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Learning Skills Council; Carmen Knowler, winner of the New Zealand Winston Churchill Fellowship Award and Danny Gale, who is involved with training.
The event will be sponsored by the following companies, who will be profiling women employees who have excelled in their job: Mira Showers, Grundfos Pumps, Plumbing Trade Supplies, Fernox and Worcester Bosch.
